Why build a website?

  • Why do you need a website?
  • Why are you building a website?
  • What is the purpose of your website?
  • What is your website for?
  • What do you want to achieve?

Can you answer these questions clearly and concisely?

The first step in creating a successful website is deciding, clearly, why it ought to exist.

Organise your thoughts and ideas, so that you know exactly what you want to do and how you plan to achieve it.

What are your objectives in building a website?

"Establishing a presence" is too vague.

  • Do you want to provide information?
  • Do you want to sell a service?
  • Do you want to sell a product?
  • Do you want to showcase your work?
  • Do you want to provide your customers with online information?
  • Do you want to promoting an image?
  • Do you want to spread information about your organisation or hobby?
  • Do you want to showcase your products?
  • Do you want to reduce your advertising costs?
  • Do you want to widen your customer base?
  • What are your long-term plans for the site?

Define your website objectives clearly - and stick to them - and your website will succeed.

Once you've determined what you want your website to achieve, it will be easier for you to decide what pages you want as well as the style of your site.

This may sound obvious, but many web sites seemed to be put together where the final objective is not clear, nor kept in mind. The result is a messy website that is disorganised, with poor navigation, and is hard to build and hard to maintain.
