Web page planner

It is absolutely essential that you take the time to plan your website. This is just like decorating a room in your home: without adequate preparation and planning the job takes longer, costs more and is usually less than satisfactory when finished.

Without planning first, your web site will be a waste of your time and hard earned money.

Planning a single webpage

“Content is King”

People visit websites for their content - not for their stylish design, the wonderful moving images or the background music.

Content is the most important factor to consider when you are planning and developing your website. Without substantial, good quality, relevant content, your website will be lost in the ether.

When you start putting the material together for your website, use this checklist to make sure you don't miss any of the key factors. You might find it easier to start a new folder (computer or paper) for each page to keep everything together for that page.

Use a word processor if possible:

  • keeps you focused on the words for the page and not the design
  • helps avoid typos and grammatical mistakes

Key points in planning a web page

For each page on your website make notes about the information you would like to include.

  1. The page topic ~ keep to one main idea or topic per page
  2. Choose between 2 and 5 keywords for each page
    • if you were your own customer, what words would you use to find each page in a search engine?
    • potential customers may use these words and phrases to search the internet for products and services like yours
    • Choosing keywords and key word phrases
  3. Structure the content of the page:
    • plan the different sections of the page
    • give them headings and sub-headings, using your page keywords where possible
    • this will make sure that you include everything when you come to writing the page in detail
    • Headings and sub-headings
  4. Write a brief outline of the content of each section
    • Start with the conclusion - then expand on it
  5. Make a note about any images you will want on the page
  6. Go through this checklist for each page
